Walking Safaris
On foot, the pulse of Africa comes through your boot’ said writer Peter Matthiessen. To walk in the African bush is, in the truest sense, to return to one’s natural state. Mankind’s first footsteps were taken on the plains of Africa, and our senses and minds evolved specifically to take us safely through this very landscape. Simply to walk quietly and without stumbling along a track littered with rocks, twigs and dry leaves is an activity that requires surprising amounts of concentration and practice for modern humans - to do this while also keeping ears, eyes and nose alert to the possibility of big game nearby creates a rush of adrenaline as intense as in the wildest adventure sport. Several locations in Tanzania offer world-class walking safaris, with hot spots for walking being the ‘wilderness zone’ in the south of Tarangire National Park, and the area around Sand Rivers lodge in the Selous Game Reserve.
