Government


The government of the United Republic of Tanzania is run along multi-party democratic lines.Executive power lies with the President and the ruling party (currently the CCM). The president, vice president and National Assembly are all elected by direct and popular vote for a term of five years. The president appoints a prime-minister who acts as leader of the National Assembly. Cabinet members are chosen by the president from among the national assembly and  the prime-minister is also the vice-president of the Republic.

There are 275 seats in the National Assembly, made up as follows:

232 seats elected from the mainland and Zanzibar archipelago
37 seats are reserved specifically for women and are divided proportionately among the various political parties
6 seats are elected by the Zanzibar House of Representatives

According to the 1977 constitution, the Union government has jurisdiction over external affairs,defence and external trade currency, while the Zanzibar government has jurisdiction over all non-union matters.

Tanzania has 25 administrative regions which are :
Arusha, Dar es Salaam, Dodoma, Iringa, Kagera, Kigoma, Kilimanjaro, Lindi, Mara, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mtwara, Mwanza, Pemba North, Pemba South, Pwani, Rukwa, Ruvuma, Shinyanga, Singida, Tabora, Tanga, Zanzibar Central/South, Zanzibar North, Zanzibar Urban/West

The Legal system is based on English common law; judicial review of legislative acts are limited to matters of interpretation. Tanzania has not accepted International Court of Justice (ICJ) jurisdiction.
