Climbing Mount Meru
Mt Meru At 4,566m, Meru is the fifth highest mountain in Africa. Many who have climbed both Kilimanjaro and Meru have claimed that Meru is a more enjoyable climb. This is probably due to a few factors. Firstly, the slopes are not as crowded, it is less expensive, and although it is steeper and the higher slopes almost as cold as Kili, you are less likely to undergo health difficulties as a result of altitude.
Also, since there are less people, the chances of seeing forest animals are higher and usually a lot of big game can be seen on the lower slopes. Climbing Meru is generally speaking a 3 day undertaking that will cost in the region of US$200 per person which should include an armed ranger/guide, hut fees, park fees and rescue fees. The best climbing months for Meru is between October and February.
An example of a 3 day climb would be:
Day One: Beginning at Momela Gate (1,500m), a relatively easy 3 hour ascent to Miriakamba Hut (2,600m). On the way you will pass through thick woodland with a good chance of seeing some large game.
Day Two: From Miriakamba Hut there is a steeper hike up to Saddle Hut (3,600m). Initially you will pass through forest, then at about 3,000m you enter the moorland region and on a clear day you can see Kilimanjaro rising through the clouds.
Day Three: A challenging day. An early rise will see the last 4 - 5 hour hike to the summit followed by a further 8 - 9 hour walk back down to Momela Gate.
