Mwanza

The principal port on Lake Victoria and the terminus of a branch of the central railway line from Dar es Salaam, with a population of nearly half a million people, Mwanza is the second largest town in Tanzania and an important transport hub. Despite this, it still exudes a sleepy, laid-back atmosphere, with the town’s social life revolving around the beautiful riverfront area with its craggy rock formations jutting up out of the water. At sunset, when thousands of birds fly across the amber-coloured sky and the waters of the lake turn glassy and still, this is one of the finest spots in the country for a waterside sundowner.
