Rubondo Island National Park
Located just off the south-west shore of Lake Victoria, Rubondo Island National Park includes Rubondo Island itself, together with several other small islands on the lake. The park protects a rich variety of fauna and flora, most famously the rare and aquatic Sitatunga antelope, with specially adapted hooves to allow it to flee across marshy and waterlogged terrain when pursued by predators. Birdlife is another highlight of Rubondo, with malachite kingfishers perching above inland streams and fish eagles uttering their harsh cries while perched on dead tree branches high above the water. If you’re very lucky, you might glimpse one of the island’s population of resettled wild chimpanzees.
