South Coast
Even more impenetrable than the north coast is Tanzania’s southern shore, stretching all the way from Dar es Salaam to the Mozambique border at Mtwara. This part of Tanzania is hard to reach by road, so the best way to travel in this region to use the method of the traders of the past and travel by sea. Passenger ferries and flights ply the route between Dar and Mtwara, but for shorter hops in the southern part of the coast, it might even be possible to take to the sea in a wooden dhow – a vessel that has changed little since the days of the Swahili sultans.
