Western Tanzania

In the extreme west of Tanzania lie the Katavi, Gombe Stream and Mahale National Parks, all of which represent some of the most remote and least-visited wildlife areas in Tanzania, if not in the whole of Africa. Mahale and Gombe Stream, only accessible by boat, offer the chance to watch the wild chimpanzees that inhabit their dense forests, while Katavi, by contrast, offers wide open plains full of huge herds of buffalo and antelope, alongside rivers heaving with hippos and crocs. Alongside these earthly delights lies Lake Tanganyika, a crystal-clear slice of paradise-blue water fringed with white beaches and filled with rare fish species.
