Gombe Stream National Park

Thanks to the work of world-famous primatologist Jane Goodall and her team, who’ve been working here since 1960, tiny Gombe Stream National Park on the shores of Lake Tanganyika is one of the best places in the world to see wild chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Years of observation by Jane Goodall and the researchers working with her have habituated the chimpanzees to humans, allowing close viewing and a unique insight into the habits of these highly intelligent primates, whose family bond are as strong as those of human beings. Reachable only by boat, the park is best visited during the dry season, which stretches from May to October. Facilities for overnight stays are limited, so most visitors come here on a day trip from the nearest town, Kigoma.
